Ointment refers to a semi-solid external preparation with a certain viscosity that are formed by uniformly mixing drugs with appropriate substrates. The drugs contained in it can be dissolved or dispersed in the matrix. Soft ointments made with emulsion-type matrices are called cream ointments. Ointments are not easy to melt, are uniform and delicate, and have appropriate viscosity, making them easy to apply to the skin or mucous membranes. They mainly provide protective effects on wounds, lubricate the skin, and have a local therapeutic effect. Some drugs can also be absorbed through the skin and produce systemic therapeutic effects.
